left home for promises…
arrived by plane, but called “fresh off the boat.”
Two years old, yet resetting to zero.
Cultures fuse with the result being,
a child who can relate to both sides,
but distinct, separate, alone.
He spends days as American,
at night, he’s Filipino.
His parents are perplexed,
wondering how this chameleon of a boy
can switch from their familiar child,
to a stranger in American clothing.
He’s traded egg rolls and rice bowls
for hot dogs and hamburgers.
This is home, now.
